[theqoo] LEE JI-AH, SPEAKS ON HER GRANDFATHER BEING A PRO-JAPANESE, “I APOLOGIZE AS A DESCENDANT…I HAVE SEVERED TIES WITH MY PARENTS”

Hello, this is Lee Ji-ah

I am sharing my stance regarding the recent reports.

After a long period of contemplation, though I was hesitant, I now believe it is right to take responsibility and correct the facts, even if it’s difficult. I apologize sincerely for the delay in expressing my position.

1. Regarding family disputes

I became independent at the age of 18, and since then, I have not received any financial support from my parents. Although it is shameful, due to a complicated family situation, I have been estranged from my parents for more than 10 years.

I have no knowledge of or involvement in the land ownership dispute, inheritance, or legal matters related to the family property that have become a point of controversy.

2. My position on my grandfather’s pro-Japanese controversy

My grandfather passed away when I was two years old, so I have no memory of him, and I was raised without any knowledge of his pro-Japanese activities.

I first came across this issue through an article in 2011. To confirm the facts, I visited the National Institute of Korean History multiple times and studied related materials. During this process, I discovered records of my grandfather’s collaboration, and even considering the historical context of the time, I believe that such actions can never be justified under any circumstances.

Additionally, if the land in question, located in Anyang, was acquired during the Japanese occupation, I believe it must be returned to the state.

3. Final Thoughts

I have never made any comments about my grandfather in the past, nor have I ever used my family to promote any articles.

However, after that, false information spread online and in comments, claiming that I had said I “respect my grandfather.” This is not true, and I wish to correct it.

Lastly, I deeply recognize the historical wrongdoings of my grandfather and, as his descendant, I sincerely apologize. Moving forward, I will approach history with humility and live with a sense of responsibility.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Lee Jia.
