[theqoo] “PERFECT CROWN” THE HISTORICAL INACCURACIES ARE FALSE, THEY’RE ACCURATE. FANDOM STEPS UP

On the 21st, the viewer message board on the official homepage of MBC’s Perfect Crown saw continued calls demanding that “the difference between historical distortion and historical inaccuracy be clearly distinguished.”

One netizen wrote, “Both the writer and director directly explained and apologized, saying this was not intentional historical distortion but rather shortcomings in research and production within a fictional world setting,” adding, “Nevertheless, people are framing the entire work in a certain way.”

Regarding the ongoing spread of rumors, mockery, and manipulated images targeting IU and Byun Wooseok, the commenter also said, “This has gone beyond the bounds of normal criticism,” and requested that “the broadcasting company show a clearer willingness to respond to false claims and defamatory posts.”

There were also rebuttals to the controversy itself over alleged historical distortion. One netizen argued, “Criticism continues over the expressions ‘Cheonsae’ and the use of the nine-beaded royal crown, claiming they depict Joseon as a tributary state, but this interpretation stems from a misunderstanding of premodern East Asian diplomatic order.” They continued, “The tributary-investiture relationship of that era was a diplomatic protocol intended to maintain peace and stability.”

They also emphasized, “Even at the Royal Culture Festival organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Cultural Heritage Administration, the Joseon king’s coronation ceremony is reenacted exactly as it was, with cries of ‘Cheonsae’ and the wearing of the nine-beaded crown,” adding, “This is not reenacting the shameful history of a tributary state, but preserving and documenting one aspect of our history.”

The commenter further pointed out, “Some reactions calling for the drama to be scrapped could actually amount to accepting the Northeast Project logic that ‘a tributary relationship equals being a vassal state,’” adding, “Burying the entire work is an act that undermines our own historical self-respect.”

Meanwhile, amid the controversy, lead actors IU and Byun Wooseok, director Park Joon-hwa, and writer Yoo Ji-won have bowed their heads in apology, but MBC has yet to release a separate official statement.
