Dispatch Blames Lee Sun-kyun’s Death On Police’s Problematic Investigation

Dispatch thinks it was the police’s mistake since they initiated the drug investigation that pushed Lee Sun-kyun to end his life

The media outlet Dispatch summarized the timeline of the drug incident and pointed out the problems in the investigation from the start.

On October 18th, the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency’s Drug Crime Investigation Unit released a report about the progress of the investigation into the drug uses of celebrities and the top 1% entertainment establishments in Gangnam. The incident started with Kim, the madam of a hostess bar, and the police actually found Lee Sun-kyun’s name during the process of investigating Kim in an unexpected way. However, they made the report without conducting an internal investigation.

A day later, information was leaked to the media. At that stage, the police were still checking the credibility of reports based on intelligence, so they did not disclose Lee Sun-kyun’s name in articles and replaced it with “top star L”.

At that time, the police had not proceeded with the investigation into Kim. Facing two allegations at a time, including drug use and blackmailing, Kim tried to get away by bringing a big name down. In the meantime, the police also needed to catch someone to make progress in their investigation so they started the investigation into Lee Sun-kyun only based on Kim’s statement without verifying the information.

On December 26th, JTBC released exclusive reports on Lee Sun-kyun’s statement about inhaling drugs through his nose using a straw thinking it was a sleeping pill based on information from the police. Similar to when KBS leaked the transcript of Lee Sun-kyun and Kim’s conversation right after the police were criticized for unreasonable investigation, this happened right after Lee Sun-kyun complained of unfairness and requested a lie detector test. Were they coincidences?

Regarding the blackmailing case, Kim made up a story to deceive Lee Sun-kyun into believing that she was threatened by a hacker so the actor transferred 300 million won to her in September. Later in October, she “threatened” him using the same way and asked for 50 million won.

Knowing Kim already has 6 convictions, the police still use her statement as an excuse to investigate Lee Sun-kyun without double-checking the information. The information they leaked to the media, such as the phone conversation and the statement about inhaling sleeping pills using a straw, could not be considered evidence as they had nothing to do with the drug charges.

In the end, Lee Sun-kyun ended his life on December 27th.
