[insitz] [JEJU AIR TRAGEDY] ‘CULINARY CLASS WAR’ AHN YOOSUNG, COMFORT BEREAVED FAMILIES WITH KIMBAP

Chef Ahn Yoosung, known for his role in the Netflix entertainment program ‘Culinary Class War,’ Chef Ahn Yoosung traveled to Muan Airport in Jeollanam-do on Tuesday to deliver 200 servings of gimbap to the families of the victims of the Jeju Air passenger plane crash.

Chef Ahn met with reporters at Muan Airport at around 4 p.m. and said, “I heard the news (of the tragedy) in the kitchen. I had a filming (schedule), but I came out with my staff to pack kimbap,” he said.

“I prepared 200 servings of kimbap,” he said, adding, “Yoon Yong-moon, the owner of (a local Muan restaurant) Muan Myunga, prepared 500 servings, and they came with me.” Chef Ahn runs a Japanese restaurant in Seo-gu, Gwangju. He and his staff prepared kimbap from early in the morning and traveled to Muan Airport.

On New Year’s Day next month, Chef Ahn plans to prepare rice cake soups and distribute it to the bereaved families. “I only have the talent to make food, so I thought it would be a good idea to give back through food,” he said. The rice cake soups service will be organized in collaboration with the Chefs Association and Gwangju Metropolitan City.

Convenience store 7-Eleven launched Tamago Sandwich and Tamago Gimbap, both named after Chef Ahn. “I bought about 500 of them at the (7-Eleven) Muan Airport store and plan to share them every day until the situation is resolved,” Ahn said.

Of the 175 passengers on board the airliner who died in the crash, 90 percent are from Jeonnam and Gwangju provinces. “(The victims) are all connected to our families,” Chef Ahn said. “Just one connection away, and we all know each other,” he said, adding, “The PD who was broadcasting with me also passed away. My heart is heavy,” he said.
