The mention of “mid-face” has increased by 70% compared to last year
“The philtrum,” which is part of the lower middle face, is actually part of the lower face
“Obsessing over the mid-face can lead to ‘appearance fixation.'”

Recently, with the influence of social media (SNS) and online communities, there has been an increase in interest in appearance, and the concept of “nose ratio” has emerged as one of the new beauty concerns.

According to keyword analysis site ‘Sometrend’ on the 11th, from October 10 to November 9 of last month, the mention of the “mid-face” (the area of the face from the eyebrows to the tip of the nose) has increased by 70.22% compared to the same period last year. During the same period, data from Naver Data Lab shows that the search volume for the “mid-face” keyword sharply increased from November 20.

The mid-face generally refers to the area from below the eyebrows to the tip of the nose. As content such as “celebrity face ratio analysis,” “face shape analysis,” and “ratio comparisons” gained popularity on SNS and YouTube, the mid-face was naturally mentioned. The perception that a short mid-face is more beautiful has spread, with idols from groups like BLACKPINK’s Jennie, ITZY’s Yuna, aespa’s Karina, and NMIXX’s Sullyoon, who are known for their shorter mid-faces, gaining popularity.

Along with this, the development of phone camera apps and filters has made people more sensitive to facial features, and the short face, including the mid-face, has become the standard of beauty. Apps such as Soda, Snow, and Beauty+ have functions that adjust the mid and lower face to make the face appear shorter, but there are no features to elongate the mid and lower face.

On YouTube and blogs, content such as “makeup for a shorter mid-face” and “treatment reviews” have also gained attention.

A beauty YouTuber, Risabae, with 2.51 million subscribers, posted a video titled “Mid-Face Reduction Tips,” which surpassed 2.88 million views in 10 months. Similarly, a video by YouTuber Geum Dami, “Makeup for a Shorter Mid-Face,” has reached 650,000 views. Other videos, including “Management for a Shorter Mid-Face in 00 Seconds,” “Mid-Face Treatment Review,” and “Philtrum Reduction Surgery for a Shorter Mid-Face,” are also becoming popular.

“It takes up to 3 weeks for surgery” – Popular even in plastic surgery clinics

As a result, surgeries and treatments to shorten the mid-face have become a trend in plastic surgery, gaining popularity. Clinics are also actively promoting these services. Some clinics even specialize in “mid-face lifting.”

Nose surgery is the most representative surgery to shorten the mid-face. Experts explain that mid-face reduction lifting, which lifts the sagging front cheeks, facial lifting to smooth out nasolabial folds and sagging around the jawline, fat grafting, thread lifting, and under-eye surgery are also included.

An employee (A) from a clinic specializing in mid-face lifting near Gangnam Station in Seoul said, “These days, mid-face shortening is in trend, and there are many inquiries about it from both men and women.”

An employee (B) from a nearby dermatology clinic explained, “I get inquiries about philtrum reduction and mid-face treatments through KakaoTalk or Instagram every day. On average, at least five people request treatments a day. Most of the time, people bring in celebrities with short faces as the ideal.”

Plastic surgery experts explain that a short mid-face makes a person appear younger, while a long mid-face can give off a more mature image.

Dr. Kwon Jeong-woo, the director of Thank You Plastic Surgery, said, “When you look at a child’s face, the face is generally round, and the proportions of the upper, mid-, and lower parts are equal. If the mid-face is short, it creates the strong perception of being youthful. If the mid-face is long, the entire face appears longer, which could make a person look older. From a plastic surgery perspective, the proportions may not be considered ideal.”

However, the expression “a short mid-face” is often misunderstood as referring to a short philtrum. This seems to have spread because the cosmetic industry includes “philtrum reduction surgery” as part of mid-face reduction procedures.

Dr. Kim Heung-gyu, the director of Elle Plastic Surgery, warned, “The spread of the belief that a short mid-face is more beautiful is partly due to plastic surgery marketing. If the philtrum is shortened through surgery, the lips may become thicker, and the philtrum may become so short that the lips curl up, causing side effects.”
