Jeon Soyeon of (G)I-DLE mentioned her contract expiration and former member Seo Soojin during her solo performance at the ‘2024 MAMA AWARDS.’

On the 23rd of last month, at the ‘2024 MAMA AWARDS’ held at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan, Jeon Soyeon performed a solo rap before (G)I-DLE’s group stage. During her performance, which featured a rap written by Jeon Soyeon herself, a particular part of the lyrics sparked controversy.

Jeon Soyeon mentioned her contract expiration with Cube Entertainment and the former member Seo Soojin, who left the group in February 2021 due to a school bullying controversy. She rapped, “You said at the end of 2021 / ‘What will you guys become without Soojin?’ / You said you would handle the contract termination and the company / If I were influenced by that, I wouldn’t have come this far.”

The public and (G)I-DLE’s fans expressed discomfort through online platforms such as ‘X’ and Instagram, saying, “Is it appropriate to mention Seo Soojin this way while she is still active?” “The performance itself was great, but it made me feel awkward,” and “I understand what she means, but I can’t help but feel strange emotions from the performance.”

Some fans argued, “The lyrics were written to match the concept of diss rap. Isn’t the message positive?” and “She wouldn’t have mentioned someone’s name in the rap without permission.”

Additionally, Jeon Soyeon rapped, “Creative criticism, fingers of passion, sincerity. But if that’s from an insider, my cheeks would turn red,” which some speculated was a reference to the internal document controversy at HYBE.

Last month, during the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee audit, a ‘Music Industry Report’ written by the former executive at Weverse Magazine under HYBE, Kang, was revealed. The report contained derogatory remarks about the skills and appearance of (G)I-DLE and other idol groups.
