As the year-end approaches, K-pop’s comeback scene has quieted down, partly due to various award ceremonies and events overlapping
Nevertheless, there is exciting news about artists preparing comebacks to kick off 2024. Notably, the consecutive comebacks of JYP Entertainment’s girl groups capture attention.
First in line for a comeback is ITZY. After winning the Best Artist Award at the “2023 Asia Artist Awards in the Philippines” (“2023 AAA”) held on December 14th, ITZY is gearing up to release their new album “BORN TO BE” on January 8th, 2024. The album features a total of 10 songs, including the title track “UNTOUCHABLE” as well as “BORN TO BE”, “Mr. Vampire”, “Dynamite” and “Escalator”.
ITZY’s comeback is noteworthy for including solo songs by each member for the first time since their debut. Solo tracks such as Yeji’s “Crown On My Head”, Lia’s “Blossom”, Ryujin’s “Run Away”, Chaeryeong’s “Mine” and Yuna’s “Yet, but” add diversity to the album.
Building anticipation for the album, ITZY released the music video for the opening track “BORN TO BE” at midnight on December 18th. The electro-dance song conveys a challenging and progressive message with ITZY’s signature confidence. The music video showcases impressive choreography and dazzling effects, contributing to the overall grandeur.
Following the album release, ITZY is set for a busy beginning of 2024. They will embark on their second world tour “ITZY THE 2ND WORLD TOUR” by holding a concert on February 24th and 25th at the Jamsil Arena in Songpa-gu, Seoul. Having completed their first world tour in April this year, ITZY is gearing up to showcase their presence worldwide once again.
NMIXX will make a comeback after ITZY. Having attended the “2023 AAA” and won the Best Choice Award, NMIXX is set to release their second mini-album “Fe3O4: BREAK” on January 15th, about 6 months after “A Midsummer NMIXX’s Dream”.
In 2023, NMIXX achieved significant milestones, becoming the seventh girl group in history to achieve “first-week million seller” status with “A Midsummer NMIXX’s Dream”. This marked JYP’s first record of its kind, surpassing achievements of senior groups like TWICE and ITZY. The title track of NMIXX’s first mini-album “Love Me Like This” demonstrated growth in popularity, securing high positions on music charts.
Having spent an extraordinary 2023, NMIXX continues their efforts to maintain momentum in 2024. They released the pre-release track “Soñar (Breaker)” on December 4th, offering a mix of Latin hip-hop and UK garage, showcasing their unique identity of mix-pop.
Additionally, TWICE has joined the comeback lineup. On December 15th, JYP announced through TWICE’s official SNS channels that the new single “I GOT YOU” will be released on February 2nd, 2024.
Currently, TWICE is actively engaged in their 5th world tour “TWICE 5TH WORLD TOUR READY TO BE”, which started in Seoul in April and has since continued in Australia, Japan, the United States, Europe and Asia. Concerts in Mexico, Brazil and the United States (Las Vegas) are hinted at for the upcoming year.
Amidst JYP girl groups making comebacks, there is also a quietly preparing debut from another JYP girl group. The 6-member rookie group VCHA, born through the collaboration project “A2K” between JYP and U.S. music label “Republic Records”, is set to officially debut on January 26th, 2024. Being a global group, VCHA’s pre-debut single “Ready for the World” performance video has surpassed 1 million views, generating high expectations for their future achievements.
