[theqoo] ABOLITION OF THE MEDICAL SERVICE ACT ON ‘GENDER SEGREGATION’ IN HOSPITAL ROOMS

The provision in the Enforcement Rules of the Medical Service Act requiring the operation of inpatient rooms separated by gender is scheduled to be deleted. 

Additionally, doctors will be subject to fines if they violate the obligation to verify information on narcotic drugs. On the 27th, the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced legislative notice regarding amendments to the Enforcement Rules and Enforcement Decree of the Medical Service Act, as well as amendments to the Rules on Administrative Dispositions Related to Medical Affairs, which contain these provisions.

According to the current Enforcement Rules of the Medical Service Act, medical institutions must operate inpatient rooms separated by gender. This regulation was introduced in 2012 for the purpose of protecting patients’ privacy.

However, the government decided to remove the regulation after concerns were raised in the medical field that it hindered the efficiency of bed management. Once the amendment is implemented, medical institutions are expected to be able to flexibly allocate patients to available beds regardless of gender. In particular, nursing hospitals are expected to benefit from the management of intensive care unit and isolation room beds.
