Bang Si-hyuk, Chairman of HYBE, was selected as a person who has introduced Asian culture to the world and has hinted at future collaborations with various cultural spheres.
Chairman Bang attended the ‘Asia Game Changer Award’ ceremony held in Cipriani, New York, USA, on the 25th of last month (Korean time) and gave a speech upon receiving the award.
The Asia Game Changer Award is presented to individuals who have represented Asia and showcased their content to the world in fields such as journalism, music, film, and comedy. Although the ceremony took place on the 25th of last month, Chairman Bang’s acceptance speech was released on YouTube on the 19th.
Chairman Bang delivered his speech in Korean, stating, “Since my youth, I have been collaborating with musicians from various cultural backgrounds, and through this, I have learned to respect and understand the diversity of different individuals and cultures. Even now, as a producer exploring various genres, and as the chairman of HYBE, which is headquartered in Korea, the United States, Japan, and Latin America, I believe that integrating differences will lead to more creative and rich musical outcomes.”
He continued, “The reason K-pop is loved worldwide is not only because it tells stories that people can universally relate to, but also because it combines the appealing strengths of various genres. For example, Jungkook of BTS, whose song ‘Seven,’ which I heard when I entered, was inspired by the British garage genre and recently collaborated with the popular American artist Latto.”
He added, “The HYBE girl group LE SSERAFIM’s song ‘Unforgiven,’ which samples Ennio Morricone’s ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,’ features legendary American guitarist Nile Rodgers. Additionally, our boy group TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s song ‘Back for More,’ a collaboration with Brazilian artist Anitta last year, significantly expanded the listener base of people who are new to music.”
Chairman Bang also mentioned, “To introduce the strengths of K-pop to the U.S. and beyond, we have collaborated with Geffen Records, a part of Universal Music, one of the top U.S. labels. As a result, the global girl group KATSEYE debuted this summer and is achieving remarkable chart success in the global market.”
