[theqoo] DID KIM KEON-HEE BLOCK BLACKPINK? THE TRUTH BEHIND THE CANCELLATION OF THEIR WHITE HOUSE CONCERT

At the end of April two years ago, during President Yoon Suk-yeol’s state visit to the U.S., the idea of a joint concert featuring BLACKPINK and Lady Gaga at the White House, which was considered as part of the cultural events between the two countries, was canceled. The opposition party brought up the “First Lady Kim Keon-hee’s involvement” in the matter.

Park Ji-won and Park Sun-won, members of the Democratic Party and former National Intelligence Service officials, recently appeared on some YouTube channels and CBS Radio, where they claimed, “First Lady Kim Keo-hee dislikes young women being involved, so she blocked the concert” and “Kim Keo-hee caused the cancellation.”

However, several former and current presidential office officials, who were familiar with the situation at the time, refuted these claims, saying, “This is not true.” They explained that the cancellation of the joint concert was due to budget issues and that the First Lady did not oppose it. A member of the ruling People Power Party’s pro-Yoon faction said in a phone interview on the 19th, “At that time, BLACKPINK had agreed not to receive additional guarantees, but the costs for staff, concert preparation, and Lady Gaga’s invitation were too much for both governments to cover.”

President Yoon’s state visit to the U.S. two years ago was conducted in strict secrecy. Since only two heads of state can visit the U.S. per year, the U.S. side requested that the presidential office remain silent until the official announcement. However, in early February 2023, about two months before the state visit, the U.S. Embassy in Seoul was informed by the White House that “the East Wing is interested” in a joint concert with BLACKPINK and Lady Gaga at the White House.

The East Wing of the White House refers to the First Lady’s office, and it was understood that Jill Biden, the wife of then-President Joe Biden, showed great interest. A former presidential office official mentioned, “Joe Biden’s granddaughter is a fan of BLACKPINK.”
