President Yoon Seokyul is expected to hold a public address on Friday to apologize for the unrest and domestic and international turmoil caused by the declaration of emergency martial law. He is unlikely to mention his future, including whether he will quit or leave office. This is likely to calm the heated public opinion ahead of the vote on the impeachment bill proposed by the opposition and prevent the defection of KPK lawmakers from the impeachment vote.
A member of the ruling coalition, who met with Yoon at the Yongsan presidential office along with Han Donghoon and other members of the BNP leadership that evening, told Hankyoreh, “President Yoon is preparing for a national dialog tomorrow. I think there will be an apology (for the impact of the recent events) in the speech.” Yoon met with Prime Minister Han Deoksoo, National Assembly Speaker Han Donghoon and party leaders Chu Kyungho at the presidential office later in the day to discuss the situation and solutions after the declaration and lifting of emergency martial law. The meeting was also attended by senior lawmakers, including Kim Ki-hyun, Kwon Sung-dong, Kwon Young-se, Yoon Jae-ok, and Na Kyung-won. Yoon explained that it was necessary to “send a strong signal to those who are trying to paralyze the government and bring down (the president) by passing the budget bill alone, impeaching him and proposing a special prosecutor,” the official said. He called Yoon’s declaration of martial law “a strong signal. He also expressed the idea that he has no intention of doing so with regard to the defection of the People’s Power Party (mentioned by Han Dong-hoon and others),” the official said. Han also did not ask Yoon to defect from the party at the meeting, the official said.
