Singer Wheesung (43, real name Choi Wheesung) was found de*d at his home on the 10th. According to the police and fire authorities, Wheesung was discovered collapsed around 6:29 PM in an apartment in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. The fire department was alerted by his family and responded to the scene.

The police and fire authorities believe that he was found a significant time after his de*th based on the circumstances at the scene, and they are investigating the specific cause of de*th. They are considering the possibility of an overd**e or su***de, among other factors. The police stated, “So far, there is no evidence of external intrusion or criminal activity,” adding, “The investigation into whether there was a su***de note and the exact cause of death is ongoing.”

Wheesung was scheduled to hold a joint concert titled The Story with singer KCM at the Daegu EXCO Auditorium on the 15th, which added to the sorrow of those around him. On March 6th, he posted a photo on his social media with the message, “Diet completed, see you on March 15th.”

However, he was indicted for using the psychoactive anesthetic propofol and was sentenced to one year in prison, with a two-year suspended sentence, in an appeals trial in 2021. Wheesung was accused of purchasing 3,910 mL of propofol for 6.5 million won and administering 3,690 mL over 11 instances between September and November 2019.

Wheesung was also found collapsed after receiving the sleep-inducing anesthetic etomidate in Songpa-gu and Gwangjin-gu in March and April of 2020. Etomidate is known to have similar effects to propofol, but unlike propofol, it had not been classified as a narcotic until recently. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on February 28 that it had proposed a revision to the Narcotics Control Act, adding etomidate and six other substances to the list of narcotic or psychoactive drugs.
