There has been a heated debate surrounding Cynthia Erivo (38), from movie Wicked, playing the role of Jesus.

On February 18 (local time), British media outlet Metro reported that Erivo has been cast as Jesus in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, which will be performed at the Hollywood Bowl in California from August 1-3.

As news of Erivo’s casting spread, a debate ensued on social media. Some netizens criticized the casting, saying, “It’s pure blasphemy. They are mocking the Christ King,” “Is Hollywood trying to destroy itself?” and “Jesus is neither Black nor female.”

On the other hand, many welcomed Erivo’s casting, with comments such as, “Erivo’s talent knows no bounds. She will do an excellent job as Jesus,” and “What a surprising and brave choice,” reflecting positive responses.
