Choi Ji-ye, a reporter for TenAsia, provides sharp and objective insights into various incidents within the entertainment industry. She meticulously analyzes the details you might have missed from a journalist’s perspective.
It is the media’s duty to investigate and report on matters of public interest. Our Constitution guarantees freedom of the press precisely for this purpose. Publicly mentioning a journalist’s name and issuing threats just because you don’t like a news report is behavior that defies common sense.
Parents of members from the group NewJeans, who claim to be part of NJZ, recently released a rebuttal to TenAsia’s article from the 14th, titled: “NJZ partners with BANA… NewJeans reportedly in talks with another agency after leaving ADOR.” In their statement, they declared, “The content of this article is completely groundless. NJZ has not signed any contract or engaged in any discussions with BANA.”
To publish this report, TenAsia verified multiple sources from within the music industry, who stated that “BANA has been handling overseas media interview requests for NewJeans members.” Furthermore, BANA employs a producer who has previously worked with NewJeans, making future collaboration plausible. Notably, the article did not definitively assert that the group was moving to BANA.
The identity of the agency collaborating with NewJeans is a legitimate matter of public interest. Reporting on the industry’s observations regarding this topic is part of the media’s usual responsibilities. However, in response to such coverage, the parents stated: “We plan to take strong legal action. The reporter, [journalist’s name], must be held legally accountable for spreading false information.” They even referenced unrelated past incidents, offering no supporting evidence.
Understanding and respecting the media’s role is essential. Expecting the press to report only favorable content is unreasonable. Posting defamatory remarks about a journalist online due to an unfavorable report could result in legal repercussions under the Information and Communications Network Act.
