Pope Francis, who led the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics for 12 years beginning in 2013, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced.
“Pope Francis passed away at 7:35 a.m. this morning, returning to the Father’s home,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican’s Secretary of State for the Curia, said in a statement.
“He dedicated his entire life to the service of the Lord and the Church,” Cardinal Farrell added.
Pope Francis had recently been hospitalized for a severe bout of pneumonia and was resuming his activities after recovering and returning to the Vatican.
He had met with the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square the day before to deliver his Easter message.
