On the 7th, the 2nd Criminal Division of the Jeju District Court sentenced Mr. A (41), who was handed over to trial on charges of causing injury to a relative and causing death, to 7 years in prison.

A was handed over to trial on charges of assaulting his mother, B, several times and eventually murdering her while drunk at an apartment in Donghong-dong, Seogwipo-si around 7 p.m. on May 17.

A directly reported to the police that “my mother lost consciousness,” but when the police arrived at the scene, B was already dead. The police urgently arrested A at the scene when circumstances of murder, including head trauma, were discovered on B’s body.

During the trial, A denied the charges. He said, “I asked for a fried egg as a snack, but she didn’t give it to me, so I got angry. At that time, I grabbed my mother’s collar and pushed her gently, and then tapped my mother’s face with my palm while she was sitting, but didn’t knock her down. My mother collapsed from dizziness and died.” he claimed.

However, the court did not accept A’s claim.

The court said, “First, as a result of the autopsy, the victim’s cause of death was confirmed to be ‘occipital contusion,’ which means that the victim’s brain was damaged as she fell backwards at very high speed without time to activate her defense mechanism.” “There is no choice but to assume that he pushed her hard, but the only person who was with him at the time was the defendant, and there is no evidence to suggest that there was an outside intrusion.”

The court continued, “Multiple bruises were found on the victim’s body, and a collapsed hanger and severely broken dishes were found at the scene where the victim was found dead,” adding, “Contrary to the defendant’s statement that he pushed the victim, a significant level of violence was used.” 

The court said, “Considering that the defendant appears to have regularly assaulted the victim, who is his mother, and that he committed this crime solely because the victim did prepare fried eggs, the defendant’s guilt is very serious and the possibility of self-blame is high.” explaining the sentence.
