Actor Choi Gwihwa has addressed the mixed opinions surrounding Squid Game 2.
On the 27th, Choi posted, “With varied reviews of Squid Game Season 2 circulating, let me add… The real game begins in Season 3. You can look forward to it.”
Choi Gwihwa appears as a participant in the Netflix original series Squid Game 2, which was released globally on the 26th. His character votes “O” to continue the game for more money and expresses dissatisfaction and threats toward those who vote “X.”
While Squid Game 2 launched amid high expectations and interest, it has drawn mixed reactions in comparison to Season 1. In response, Choi, as a cast member, commented that the real excitement would come with Season 3.
Recently, director Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed the series with Variety. He revealed, “When I first wrote the stories for Seasons 2 and 3, it was a single long narrative. Initially, I planned to tell it across 8–9 episodes. But as I completed the story, it expanded to over 10 episodes, and I realized it was too lengthy for one season. I decided to create a suitable stopping point for Season 2 and then continue with Season 3. Considering Gi-hun’s journey, it felt like the right moment to pause and provide him some closure before moving forward.”
Regarding the release timeline for Season 3, Hwang stated, “What I can share is that after Season 2 premieres, we’ll soon announce the release date for Season 3. It’s expected to begin next summer or fall. Each remaining episode will only improve, with more expansive and intense storytelling, and undoubtedly greater enjoyment. So please stay tuned until the very end.”
Squid Game 2 follows Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) as he returns to the deadly game seeking revenge and faces off against the Frontman (played by Lee Byung-hun) in a fierce showdown, while the “real game” begins anew.
