[theqoo] THE K-POP FAN CLUB SYSTEM SAID TO BE “DEEP-ROOTED IN EVIL” AMONG K-POP FANS NOWADAYS

The “permanent system” for fan clubs is a system where anyone can join a fan club (or membership, etc.) as long as they pay, at any time. For entertainment agencies, it’s a system that allows them to secure fans who join at any moment and continuously generate revenue, so there’s no downside for them. That’s why more agencies, like HYBE, SM, and YG, are increasingly operating under this permanent system. (t/n: in fan clubs, there are “permanent system” when fans can join anytime and “membership system” where there are recruiting periods only once (or twice) per year, and would be opened for only limited amount of people to join & special rules to follow. The new permanent system allows anyone to join. In the old membership system, you will have to renew memberships every year, meanwhile the new system is permanent with subscription)

However, from the fans’ perspective, even after event or performance announcements, anyone (including resellers targeting early ticket sales) can join the fan club and receive early ticket purchase benefits. This has led to incidents where these resellers use illegal methods to hoard large numbers of tickets during early sales, a problem that occurs at almost every performance. Additionally, most concerts now open all seats during early sales (except for special seats), so fans who pay for fan club membership but can’t get tickets are becoming more and more common.

This creates a vicious cycle:

1. Resellers, smelling profit, use the permanent system to hoard early tickets.

2. They either sell these tickets with a markup or engage in fraudulent activity.

3. True fans, unable to get tickets, are willing to pay for tickets with a markup, even if they are resold.

3. The resale prices skyrocket.

4. More resellers get involved in the next concert.

As a result of this issue, many fans are demanding a return to the old membership system, where fans could join fan clubs only during specific recruitment periods.

Additionally, some companies no longer provide kits that were once given when joining fan clubs, or they charge separately for them. Some even have no discounts for fan meetings.

Fans belonging to agencies that still use the old membership system are hoping that it doesn’t change.
