Regarding the reason why Korean women are reluctant to give birth, McKinsey said, “In Korea, people give up childbirth because they know the reality of what it is like to be a mother. If knowing the reality prevents childbirth, it is ‘reality’ that must change.”
She continued, “Many women are faced with situations where they cannot afford childbirth, such as long working hours and the reality of having to choose between childbirth and a career. If it were not for these circumstances, there would be many women who would have willingly chosen pregnancy and childcare.”
However, she said, “What they wanted was not more support from the government. They wanted more flexible working hours, a change in reality where spouses could raise children together, and not have to choose between home and work.”
