On the 17th, Mrs. A, a student at Konkuk University’s Global Campus, appeared on the Chungjusi’s YouTube channel.

On that day, Kim Sun-tae, said to A, “I’ll ask you something I’m curious about,” and asked, “Galaxy users kind of have that reputation.. and I’m curious about the perception among college students these days.”

“I don’t mind it, but I hope they don’t take a picture of me with that phone,” A said.

When asked, “What do you think about men using Galaxy,” she said, “My friend got her number asked and the phone the other person was holding was a Galaxy. She said that she was very taken aback, and did not contact the guy.”

The comments sparked a debate. Netizens criticized her, saying, “So using an iPhone is sensual and using a Galaxy is outdated?”, “I find the idea of meeting people based on their phones fascinating”, and “She’s like an iPhone ambassador”.

As the controversy grew, Chungjusi eventually removed the video.

Recently, the preference for iPhones among young people has become more prevalent.

According to Korea Gallup’s “2023 Smartphone Usage & Brands” survey in July, 65% of South Koreans aged 18 to 29 use Apple’s iPhone. Only 32% said they used a Galaxy.

In the same survey last year, 52% of the same age group used an iPhone and 44% used a Galaxy. In just one year, the gap has widened to 33 percentage points, with iPhone up 13 percentage points and Galaxy down 12 percentage points.

The trend toward iPhone is particularly pronounced among women. Among women ages 18 to 29, 71% use an iPhone.
