Actors Who Performed Excellently In 2023 Even Without A Chance To Win Daesang Trophies

These actors created a sensation but couldn’t compete for Daesang because their works were not aired on terrestrial channels

Three terrestrial broadcasters are about to hold year-end award ceremonies. While raising anticipation for actors Nam Goong-min, Lee Je-hoon and Choi Soo-jong to win each of the three broadcasters’ Daesang, drama fans are also showing regret for actors and works on cable channels and OTT platforms as they don’t organize year-end award ceremonies.

Jo In-seong

Disney+ made a big hit this year with “Moving”, a webtoon-based series produced with a huge budget of 9.8 million USD. The drama starred a splendid lineup of trustworthy actors, such as Ryu Seung-ryong, Han Hyo-joo, Jo In-sung, Ryu Seung-beom and Cha Tae-hyun, and young stars, such as Lee Jung-hae, Go Youn-jung and Kim Do-hoon. Among them, Ryu Seung-ryong and Jo In-sung drew favorable reviews for their passionate acting as people with superpowers. Han Hyo-joo, who performed a romance with Jo In-sung as a couple, also impressed viewers with her portrayal of mother’s love.

Uhm Jung-hwa

JTBC also achieved good results this year. If JTBC held an award ceremony, there would be a fierce face-off for Daesang between “Doctor Cha” Uhm Jung-hwa and “Agency” Lee Bo-young. In particular, Uhm Jung-hwa enjoyed her heyday again with her title role in “Doctor Cha”, the drama with the highest rating record on JTBC in 2023. She aroused deep sympathy from viewers by presenting realistic acting as Cha Jung-sook, who becomes a first-year resident after being a housewife for 20 years. In an interview, Uhm Jung-hwa shared, “Cha Jung-sook is trying to to find her dream after saying ‘I did all I could as a mother’, and her journey was incredibly touching”.

Park Eun-bin

“Crash Course in Romance” topped the list of tvN’s Sat-Sun dramas this year. Starring Jeon Do-yeon, the drama achieved a rating peak of 17%, higher than “Our Blues” and “Under The Queen’s Umbrella”. Overcoming the age gap of 10 years to complete a heart-fluttering romance with Jung Kyung-ho, Jeon Do-yeon proved her power as a “Romcom Queen”.

Park Eun-bin’s performance in the recently ended drama “Castaway Diva” was also amazing. Apart from practicing singing three hours a day for six months, she also learned to swim, play the guitar and speak in dialect to play her character perfectly. Thanks to her efforts, the actress successfully erased her image of the previous hit work “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”.

Despite not appearing in terrestrial dramas, many actors have been doing so well this year. Since the Baeksang Arts Awards next year will include all kinds of dramas, expectations are already high for the winner of Daesang.
