Big Bang G-Dragon has officially released a statement regarding drug suspicions.

In the early morning of the 27th, G-Dragon’s lawyer Kim Soo-hyun of K-One Chamber Law Firm conveyed GD’s position saying, “We want to convey Kwon Ji-yong’s position regarding the unfounded news that has been spreading indiscriminately in the media recently. This is Kwon Ji-yong. First off, I have never taken drugs. I have nothing to do with the news reports about ‘violating Narcotics Control Act’ that were recently released to the media. But I know many people are concerned so I will faithfully and actively cooperate with investigations.”

After GD denied the allegations, the public’s reaction was sharply divided. As he’s a star who has greatly influenced the public with everything he does including music and fashion, suspicions of drug abuse by a man so-called ‘icon’ representing Korea is bound to be shocking. Since he also announced plans for various activities, including preparing a solo album, many fans are hoping the drug use suspicions are just unfair accusations.

Overseas fans are also in shock. G-Dragon reigns as a top star not only in Korea but also overseas. After reports accusing GD of drug use, overseas fans are watching the situation unable to hide their shock. One fan posted a message of support on SNS saying, “With GD forever..” despite drug use rumors. The post has attracted attention and has been revealed that G-Dragon even “liked” it.

On the other hand, most of the public’s gaze toward GD is cold. This is not the first time he has been accused of drug use. In 2011, he was booked by police in Japan on suspicions of smoking marijuana and his hair tests even came back positive.

GD said at the time, “I once smoked a cigarette given to me by a stranger at a club in Japan.” Because he was a first-time offender and the level of substances detected did not meet standards for sentencing of drug offenders, his indictment was suspended.

In 2012, GD appeared on SBS Healing Camp‘ and complained of being unfairly accused of smoking marijuana. He emphasized, “I couldn’t tell the difference (between marijuana and cigarettes) because I’ve never smelled marijuana. It doesn’t make sense that I would lie, it wouldn’t work. If I had lied, I wouldn’t have been able to face the public.”

12 years later, GD is once again at the center of a shocking allegation for suspicions on drug use. And once again, he’s actively denying the charges against him saying “it’s not true.” Some people believe his claims but some don’t. This is because there is a belief that there’s no way he would blindly deny the shocking suspicions covering the public’s eyes with lies.

On the other hand, the example shown by Park Yoochun makes it easy for the public not to believe GD’s statement. When suspicions of Yoochun’s meth abuse broke out, he even held a press conference where he shed tears and declared that “if the drug use is true he would retire from the entertainment industry.” But that was turned over like switching over his palms and he’s continuing activities.

Meanwhile, police plan to summon G-Dragon to conduct drug tests. The Ministry of Justice has also since banned him from leaving the country. Attention is focused on his subsequent actions as he has become the culprit of a shocking drug scandal that has turned Korea upside down.
