[instiz] OBITUARY FOR A SEWOL FERRY SURVIVOR (TW: MENTAL HEALTH)

In the immediate aftermath of the Sewol ferry disaster, So-hee, who, in her extreme anguish, had tried many times to follow her friends in d**th, finally joined them at Ansan Sky Park. Many people shared in this sorrow. A few days ago also marked the anniversary of diver Kim Kwan-hong’s d**th. I hope we don’t forget that not only the victims who were k*lled and their bereaved families, but also the surviving students and civilian divers are victims as well.

There’s something I want to say.

I realize people say this out of sympathy, hoping the survivors will lead good lives, but the phrase “You must live your life to the fullest for the sake of your friends who left first”, this is something we simply must not say.

The surviving students watched their friends d** right before their eyes and returned home with immense pain. Because they were the only ones to return alive, they face judgmental stares and are burdened by “guilt”, making it difficult not only to pursue their dreams but even to simply get through each day. For the vast majority, their own lives have already been turned upside down. Telling these survivors that they must live for their friends who have passed away is more than just secondary victimization, it is a horrific act of v**lence that borders on m*rd*r.

It is a terrible act of v**lence.”

“So I hope people won’t say things like that so casually.

I hope you stay healthy in body and mind, and above all, don’t feel guilty, I’d be happy if you could just live an ordinary life, just like everyone else. Though living like everyone else, living an ordinary life, is truly difficult, and perhaps even impossible.

And when I think of the surviving students who are still suffering in silence, seeing my friend So-hee who has left us… I feel so very sorry.”

2. Even though I had no connection to the person, I’m so sad, I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for them… I humbly pray for the repose of the deceased’s soul.

3. I’ve heard that many survivors end up taking their own lives because of the guilt they feel for being the only one left alive. I really hope the government doesn’t cut off support and that they provide sufficient treatment and mental health supportㅠㅠㅠ
