Ever since her debut as a CF model in 1996, Song Hye-kyo has always been at the center of the spotlight every time she released a new acting project throughout the 27 years of her acting career. This year is no exception.

Song Hye-kyo made an extraordinary start in 2023 with the great success of Netflix’s hit series “The Glory”. According to Netflix, “The Glory” ranked third in the rankings of content with the highest viewing time. The drama also made headlines in various foreign media outlets and made it to 20 Best Korean K-Dramas of 2023 selected by Forbes. The British magazine NME also mentioned “The Glory” as the No.1 drama when publishing the article about Top 10 Korean Dramas of 2023.

Led by Song Hye-kyo, “The Glory” also had a huge impact on changing the world. According to the 2023 1st School Violence Survey conducted by the Ministry of Education, the percentage of bullying complaints and reports from elementary, middle and high school students reached the highest level in the past decade. This proved the growing awareness about eradicating school violence and victims have begun to gain more courage in revealing their damage and asking for help.

With all the efforts and sincerity she poured into “The Glory”, Song Hye-kyo was honored with Best Actress in Drama at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards. Delivering her acceptance speech, the actress drew admiration with her calm and witty talks. Also, she did not forget to give credit to screenwriter Kim Eun-sook, who entrusted her with the leading roles from “Descendants of the Sun” to “The Glory”, the director, production staff, and fellow actors.

As a Hallyu star, Song Hye-kyo also did her best to promote Korea to the world. On the Independence Movement Day (March 1st), she worked with Sungshin Women’s University Professor Seo Kyung-deok to produce a video introducing independence activist Jung Jung-hwa. The actress also narrated a special documentary about Lee Yong-soo, a victim of Japanese army’s sexual slavery, that aired on March 1st. She then participated in producing and distributing guidebooks written in Korean and English to historical places of Korea overseas on Liberation Day. In November, she donated relief works by independence activist Jo Myung-ha to Taipei Korean School.

Song Hye-kyo has been doing such meaningful endeavors quietly and steadily with Professor Seo for more than 10 years without expecting any recognition in return. This consistency is one of her greatest strengths and it can also be noticed in her acting career.

Actress Song Hye-kyo has completed a successful 2023, and hopefully, she will achieve more in the new year.
